Budweiser Gluten Test

Budweiser is probably the most famous American beer. When beer appears in American movies or TV series it’s a Budweiser. Probably to show average American behaviour as this beer also tastes very average. The name Budweiser is derived from the German name of the Czech city of Budejovice (Budweis) and so it’s a Budweiser. Thank god it’s not coming from Hamburg 🙂

It tastes watery and sweet but it is actually not that bad. Still it can not be compared with the Original Czech Budweiser which has the same alcohol but tastes very different to the American Budweiser. And this is the gluten test result for this famous beer:

Beer: Budweiser
Producer: Anheuser-Busch
Originating country: USA
Brewing location: USA
Bottle size: 16 oz (approx. 470 ml)
Alcohol by volume: 5.0%
Ingredients: water, barley malt, hops, yeast, rice
Miscellaneous: Ingredients listed in German as product sold in Germany

Sorry for the poor picture quality but I did not have enough light.

I tested with a threshold of 5 ppm. The limit of detection depends on the number of drops taken from the extraction solution, please find some more information here.

Test result: The test is negative. In this test Budweiser has less than 5 ppm gluten (or even no gluten). However, it is not a medical advice – please see my facts page.

Miller High Life Gluten Test

As a result of the recent poll I promised to test two famous American beers – Miller High Life and Budweiser. I started with Miller which had the best taste of the American beers I tested so far. The reason might be the stronger alcohol as the flavour carrier which Miller contains compared to the two light beers with less alcohol I tested so far: Busch and Bud Light. Anyway, here is the Miller High Life gluten test result.

Beer: Miller High Life
Producer: Miller Brewing Company
Originating country: USA
Brewing location: USA
Bottle size: 12 oz = 0.355 l
Alcohol by volume: 4.7%
Ingredients: water, barley malt, hops, yeast
Miscellaneous: Ingredients listed in German as product sold in Germany

Miller High Life Gluten Test

Test result: The test is negative. In this test Miller High Life has less than 5 ppm gluten (or even no gluten).

Despite the fact the test doesn’t indicate the presence of gluten above a level of 5 ppm please note this is not a medical advice – as all other tests on my site aren’t.

Please also refer to MillerCoors FAQs where they state the following:
“Gluten and non-gluten proteins are found in wheat, rye and barley. Because of the brewing process itself and filtration, beer made from barley malt does not contain large amounts of protein; however, some protein is essential for beer quality. Therefore, there are some proteins and trace amounts of gluten in our products. We recommend that anyone with gluten sensitivity not consume any of our products without prior discussion with their doctors.”

Busch Beer Gluten Test

Busch beer is on place 8 of America’s best selling beers, please see here an interesting slideshow of the best selling beers of 2012. Busch is brewed by Anheuser-Busch and was called Busch Bavarian Beer until 1979.

After my gluten test of course I drank the beer and honestly I could not taste much difference to Bud Light which I tested earlier. And, as I mentioned above, it was called Bavarian beer but it really has nothing to do with e.g. the Bavarian beers I recently tested. But let’s come to the purpose of this post – how much gluten does Busch beer contain?

Beer: Busch
Producer: Anheuser-Busch
Originating country: USA
Brewing location: USA
Bottle size: 12 oz can (approx. 340 ml)
Alcohol by volume: 4.3%
Ingredients: water, barley malt, cereal grains, hops, yeast
Miscellaneous:  –

Bud Light Gluten Test

Bud Light is America’s best-selling beer with a revenue of almost 6 billion USD. I don’t know if this beer has been tested previously but I can imagine that many people would like to know what level of gluten Bud Light contains. Here is my test result.

Beer: Bud Light
Producer: Anheuser-Busch
Originating country: USA
Brewing location: USA
Bottle size: 16 oz (approx. 470 ml)
Alcohol by volume: 4.2%
Ingredients: water, barley malt, hops, yeast, rice

American Beer Gluten Tests

Most of the website visitors and requests I received are from America. I am very happy to get this positive feedback from America. There seems to be a huge demand for exactly these gluten tests and so I ordered a few American beers for the next test series.

It is quite difficult to get original American beers here in Germany and it mostly comes in this fancy aluminum bottles. I prefer glass bottles but never mind, it doesn’t make a difference for the test – only for the taste.

Beer: Hofbrau Oktoberfest

Originating country: Germany
Brewing location: Germany
Bottle size: 0.5 l
Alcohol by volume: 6.3%
Ingredients: water, barley malt, hops (translated from German)

Hofbrau Oktoberfestbier Gluten Test

Test result: A clearly visible red line appears on the right of the test stick ( T ) which indicates the presence of gluten equal to or above 5 ppm (most likely above because of the past results). The red line is quite weak (even weaker than in the Lowenbrau Gluten Test) but still clearly visible. Even though this test is positive please note it is not a medical advice – see my facts page.

Löwenbräu Oktoberfestbier Gluten Test

Here is my first Oktoberfest beer test as announced a few days ago. This Lowenbrau (or Löwenbräu with mutated vowels) beer has been tested with very low gluten in the past and here is the result of my test.

Beer: Lowenbrau Oktoberfest
Producer: Lowenbrau
Originating country: Germany
Brewing location: Germany
Bottle size: 0.5 l
Alcohol by volume: 6.1%
Ingredients: water, barley malt, hops, hops extract (translated from German)
Miscellaneous:  Only available during Oktoberfest times in Germany

Test result: A clearly visible red line appears on the right of the test stick ( T ) which indicates the presence of gluten equal to or above 5 ppm (most likely above because of the past results). The red line is not bright but clearly visible. Even though this test is positive please note it is not a medical advice – see my facts page.

Oktoberfest Beer Gluten Tests

It’s Oktoberfest time in Germany and during this time a special beer is available which is bottom-fermented, contains strong alcohol but has a very smooth taste. Just don’t drink too much of it to avoid a headache. But what about the level of gluten? There are previous studies which show very low gluten for two tested Oktoberfest beers. According to a research from  November 2009 done by the National Food Agency of Sweden the gluten content is as follows:

Hofbräu Oktoberfestbier – 26 ppm
Löwenbräu Oktoberfestbier – 21 ppm

I will test both again. Stay tuned for the test results.
