There are not many Belgian beers available in Germany. Well, there is actually no need to import beer from Belgium as the German beer is generally good but Belgian beer has a good reputation in the world. From the few Belgian beers I found most contain strong alcohol and wheat like Chimay and Grimbergen. One exception is Duvel, no wheat according my internet research (see below the ingredients are not listed on the label) but still strong alcohol. Alcohol delivers flavour so Duvel has a crisp taste. But for me it has too much alcohol and too much gas so it will not become one of my favourites. And here is the gluten test result:

I tested with a threshold of 5 ppm. The limit of detection depends on the number of drops taken from the extraction solution, please find some more information here.
Test result: There is no indication of the presence of gluten above 5 ppm. According to the instructions there should appear a clearly visible red test line on the right of the test area ( T ) to indicate the presence of gluten. The blue line on the left test area ( C ) is a control line and indicates that the extract/sample is suitable, the test has been performed correctly and all reagents are active. In this test there is no indication that Duvel has more than 5 ppm gluten. However, it is not a medical advice – please see my facts page.

Had a Duvel after work yesterday.
It was absolutely delicious but boy oh boy was it strong.
Not one I’d buy too often though – it was $AUS8 for one bottle!

Agreed, taste is good but one bottle is already enough because of the strong alcohol. For me a bit too much gas, though.

Thanks Steffen, I will have try a Duvel. Tried another ‘Belgian beer’ but made in UK – Stella Artois, the other day no ill effects, but not a great beer. The Brits call Stella ‘wife beater.’ A bit strong for them @ 4.8% ?

Hi Les, yeah when I used to live in England a draught Stella was often my first choice in a pub. Haven’t tried the bottled Stella but it is probably the best selling Belgian beer in the world. Cheers Steffen

Duvel is sold in most bars here in Utrecht and the Netherlands so I am really happy that I can drink this without any complaints! Though I must say…if I have more than two I will get a little blurry sighted 😉

Sigh… Diagnosed CD in the last year at 55. I had one Duvel yesterday and was bloated and uncomfortable all night. I guess 5ppm is too much for me. So long beer! Its been a great ride.

Hi Geoff, sorry to hear that. If you suffer from tiny amounts of gluten already yes better stay away from barley or wheat containing beers.

I just had my first Duvel a few days ago and it was fantastic! No gas issues for me, and the high ABV doesn’t bother me because I only have one beer a week.
I will certainly have another one when it returns to the Yard House in Burbank, California.

Well, I didn’t have a reaction on that. But I probably can take more gluten than others. Just be careful if you react on tiny amounts of gluten already better stay away from regular beer.
