This is my first ‘double feature’. I present you today two test results – both from the famous Augustiner brewery in Munich. Augustiner is actually the oldest brewery in Munich and always when I am in Munich I visit the famous Augustiner Keller which has delicious food and excellent beer. My favourite beer is the ‘Edelstoff’ (freely translated with precious stuff) with an ABV of 5.6%. Of course they sell the draught version in the restaurant but anyway I wanted to test the gluten content as there should be no difference to the bottled beer. In parallel I tested the Helles (classic Lager), which has less alcohol. Both are excellent in taste, quaffable and with a very good score on Beeradvocate: Helles, Edelstoff
Beer: Augustiner Helles / Augustiner Edelstoff
Producer: Augustiner Bräu
Originating country: Germany
Brewing location: Germany
Bottle size: 0.5 l = approx. 16 Oz.
Alcohol by volume: 5.2% / 5.6%
Ingredients: water, barley malt, hops
Miscellaneous: –
Test Kit: GlutenTox Home Kit
I tested with a threshold of 5 ppm. The limit of detection depends on the number of drops taken from the extraction solution, please find some more information here.
Test result: There is no indication of the presence of gluten above 5 ppm in both samples. According to the instructions there should appear a clearly visible red test line on the right of the test area ( T ) to indicate the presence of gluten. The blue line on the left test area ( C ) is a control line and indicates that the extract/sample is suitable, the test has been performed correctly and all reagents are active. Please don’t take any of my test results as a medical advice – see my facts page.
*Helles on the left, Edelstoff right. Please note I had much better light conditions when I tested Edelstoff. Hence, the difference in the picture quality.

Ah, always so excited to see a new beer (and this time – TWO!) get a clean bill, but then super disappointing to find out the lcbo and the beer store don’t carry it here in Ontario. Thanks for doing these though, when I travel, it will be awesome to have the list!
Steffen
Hi Beanny Jim, thanks for your kind feedback. Loads of Canadians (and of course people from a lot of other countries) are currently enjoying the beer at the Munich Oktoberfest – the biggest party in the world. And the Augustiner brewery even have their own marquee tent there: http://www.festhalle-augustiner.com/html/english.html . Cheers Steffen

Hi Steffen, I’ve contacted you a few months ago and said I would try some German beers next time I’d be there. I’m coeliac and I tried the Augustiner Edelstoff.
I shouldn’t have reacted but I unfortunately have. I will try a Bitburger or a Warsteiner next time, but this one is a big NO for me 🙁
Steffen
Hi Dominique, sure I remember you (Coeliac and French 🙂 ). I am sorry to hear. Did you try the draught Edelstoff or bottled? Anyway, don’t push when you are very sensitive.
Will be in Toulouse next week.
Cheers Steffen

It was bottled !
I also had a few sips on Waldhaus which seemed OK for me, will try half a pint later in summer
ps: I’ll be in Narbonne next Week 🙂
Steffen
Enjoy the beach 😉

I just visited Munich and couldn’t resist trying a Helles draft beer assuming I would feel terrible afterwards. I was shocked that it didn’t affect me. I came across your site after trying to figure out why and found it to be a super useful resource. I’m not a Coeliac but intolerant so I may not be as sensitive as some of your readers. Thanks for taking the time to share your tests with us. Cheers!
Steffen
Hi Eric,
Thanks for sharing your experience.
